Motivation, BattleCry, et al

I don't know the secret to motivation. If I did, I would write a book about it and probably be rich. I have found motivation for different things at different times in my life. Obviously, updating a blog has not been one of those things for some time. (Unfortunately, going to the gym has not been either. Ha!) Well...since I had a sliver of motivation tonight--and a little urging from my lovely wife--I thought I would update.

It's been a long weekend. We had BattleCry this weekend in San Fran. It doesn't take long there to realize that some people just don't get it. They're either ignorant of the negative impact that Hollywood, the media, many video games, and television have on this generation, or they are so affected by it, they can't see it. There was quite the irony going on there. On one side, we had "the true church" telling people that BattleCry leads to hell. On the other, the "church of perpetual indulgence" and other "progressives" calling us intolerant, fundamentalist, right-wing bigots. All I can say is...only in San Fran! (God love 'em.)

There was a lot of media coverage. Just Google "BattleCry" under "news" to find any number of articles on the event.

On a personal note, I was up all night on Saturday night/Sunday morning. I had a great time, but was obviously wiped after that! Add to that the fact that we had a two-hour time difference on the way back, plus a one-hour time change, and you get pretty messed up! I layed in bed until after 1 am last night. Hopefully I'll fair better tonight!

Thanksgiving

I really enjoyed reading everyone's responses to my last post. They truly show the uniqueness of each person and the ways God touches our hearts.

So...another question for Thanksgiving week. (Plus an optional bonus question.)

What's something God has done in your life recently that you are thankful for? And (optional question) what do you think He wants us to know about being thankful? (I'm giving a message on thankfulness, so your responses might just be shared with others!)

Wilderness Experiences

A friend of mine is going through a divorce right now. We were holding out hope, but now it seems inevitable. I wanted to share the email I wrote to him. It's something I believe the Lord is showing me about how he can use the hard times in our lives. I hope it will bless someone else who may be going through a difficult time...

My heart is so broken for the situation you find yourself in. Every time I think about it, all that comes to mind is that God is the God of redemption. I don't know how, but somehow he will take this and turn it around for good. I can't truly understand what you are feeling right now, but I can definitely relate to the "wilderness experience." That's what Shanygne and I went through this spring after our loss, and I imagine what all of us go through in times of significant loss or hurt. Even through the wilderness experience, though, it sounds like the Lord has given you significant insight, or deeper understanding, of some of his truths--his love for his Bride in particular. I'm beginning to believe that we can't truly experience the depths of some of those truths except in the difficult times. Those times seem to take us to truths so profound that they leave a permanant mark on the landscape of our lives. I guess that's part of the way that Abba "works all things out for the good of those who love him"--even the seemingly "hopeless" things.

Hang in there and know that you have our support in prayer!

Well...it seems strange to say it, but I am officially a PASTOR! I got licensed at church on Sunday. So now I can "marry and bury," as they say. I'll have to order some new checks that say "Rev. and Mrs Kevin G..."! Ha, ha.

Joel and Kina (Christina) were licensed, too, and are on their way to start a church plant in Virginia. Please pray for them!

Sabbath Work

It's great to have a holiday weekend to catch up. I took the opportunity to help my daughter clean her room. We tackled it BIG TIME on Saturday, plus I got a number of long-standing (aka "incomplete") projects done in there as well. We came up with a great system for organizing her stuff--the whole "everything has a place and everything in it's place" philosophy.

On Sunday, we still had a couple small details to finish up. I asked Em to take a stack of clean laundry to her room. Do you know what she said to me??!!

"Dad, haven't you heard about the Sabbath?"

Our gospel reading came back to bite me in the butt! But, remembering how struck Em was by the religious leaders of Jesus' day being so particular about what he did on the Sabbath (and not to be outdone), I said,

"Em, haven't you heard about the Pharisees?"

Maybe it wasn't the best thing to say to my daughter...but she took her clothes to her room.
